Vincent van Gogh, a life for art offers two hours of viewing pleasure and a never previously shown portrait of the artist. No-one dedicated himself so uncompromisingly to his art as Van Gogh. What drove him? What made him so exceptional as an artist? In this documentary experts from the Van Gogh Museum talk lovingly and with humour about Van Gogh’s remarkable life and career, examining it at length. Many pressing questions are answered. Was he a born artist? Where did his talent lie? Did he really live a life of poverty? His illness and his troubled relationship with his parents are dealt with. But the documentary also sheds light on his style and technique. The restorer even takes the viewer by the hand right into the painting – exploring the layers of paint. Van Gogh’s life is documented from beginning to end and the dilemmas he faced become tangible. Footage of all the places where Van Gogh lived, supplemented with historical photographs, combine to make this film an invaluable document. The authentic images and the expert commentary bring the artist dangerously close – as if we were intimately acquainted with him and his world.
