Summary: "The ageing of populations across the globe is resulting in an increase in the rates of dementia across the board. Dementia in the Aboriginal community is growing too and more needs to be done to make more people aware of the illness and how to identify it. In Aboriginal communities there are a number of causes of dementia ranging from the most common - Alzheimer's - to acquired brain injuries from violence and substance abuse, be it alcohol or drugs. Vascular disease can also cause dementia in older people. Awareness is the big issue along with the difficulties of treatment and care, especially in relation to people from remote and regional communities. The film looks at the improving world of diagnosis and how cultural sensitivities are being built in to make diagnosis more accurate. This DVD looks at how people can be cared for at home and what happens as the illness progresses."
